Atlanta school district employees will get pay raises next year under the district's $730 million proposed budget.

The budget calls for teachers and other employees to get automatic raises based on gaining another year of experience, plus raises of 2 percent for teachers and 1 percent for other staff, Superintendent Meria Carstarphen said Monday.

On top of that, some employees will get additional raises.

Atlanta Public Schools plans to spend $4 million on raises for non-teaching staff whose pay was frozen in past years to bring them on par with newer employees.

All together, the raises total about $9 million this year alone.

That’s in addition to about $1.5 million in signing and retention bonuses of up to $5,000 for staff at the district’s lowest-performing schools.

The district also plan to cut positions this spring, many of them in the central office, Carstarphen said.
