More than 80 people in North Georgia have been arrested in connection with a large drug investigation, the GBI announced Friday.
The GBI’s West Metro Regional Drug Enforcement Office collaborated with Clayton County police and sheriff’s offices in Henry and Spalding counties to execute a series of search warrants and make arrests, according to a news release.
The investigation began in October and four locations in Hampton were searched Dec. 16, resulting in 14 people being arrested on charges related to trafficking and possessing methamphetamine. Arrest warrants have been issued for five more people, according to GBI spokeswoman Natalie Ammons.
Investigators seized more than a kilogram of meth, which had a street value of about $12,000, according to officials. They also found $41,000 in drug proceeds, Ammons said.
The investigation was a spin-off of a Butts County Sheriff’s Office drug bust that resulted in the arrest of 70 people. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has asked the sheriff’s office for more information on its operation.
Channel 2 Action News reported that Butts sheriff’s investigators began the operation, but then found that the drug distribution extended into many counties, including Gwinnett.
