About 85 people have applied to replace DeKalb County School District Superintendent Michael Thurmond, whose contract expires in June. Applications will be taken through April 10, and a new superintendent is expected to be named next month.
Jim MaMahan, vice chairman of the DeKalb Board of Education and a membere of the citizens group started to assist with the selection, said he expected the number to be at or above 100 by the application deadline.
After the application period closes, the board will conduct interviews the week of April 13, where finalists will be determined. Background checks of the finalists will begin the week of April 20. In early May, finalists will be interviewed by the full board and the Community Engagement Liaison Committee.
Thurmond, who was appointed interim superintendent in February 2013, has said he would not want to stay on after the last extension of his contract, which ends in June.
