The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter on Winder Highway will reopen Saturday, some three weeks after one dog died and several others came down with an unknown illness that was later determined to be kennel cough.
The shelter was closed April 10, and a temporary shelter was opened on April 16 at the county’s former animal shelter facility on Hi Hope Road.
Gwinnett County police Cpl. Michele Pihera said Wednesday that the shelter staff “has been working tirelessly to clean and sanitize the Winder Highway shelter while maintaining shelter operations at the temporary Hi Hope Road shelter.”
She said the Winder Highway facility was being steam-cleaned Wednesday, and the animals at the temporary shelter will be transferred to the Winder Highway shelter on Friday.
The county will host a “Grand Re-Opening” of the Winder Highway shelter from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
“There will be many animals available for adoption that will be eligible to take home on Saturday,” Pihera said, adding that the adoption fee is $90.
