Gov. Nathan Deal announced Friday a new council of religious leaders tasked with expanding upon the recent overhaul of Georgia’s criminal justice rules.

The Governor’s Interfaith Council is comprised of religious leaders across the state and will work to identify areas in which faith-based ministries, state agencies and private organizations can partner to address a released inmate’s re-entry into society.

“On any given day, their houses of worship minister to prisoners, give comfort to family members and provide assistance to returning citizens,” said Deal. “These council members are on the front lines in Georgia communities, and their perspective and experience are invaluable. I’m grateful for their willingness to serve.”

The council of 14 religious leaders involves church leaders from across Georgia. It also includes Rabbi Larry Schlesinger, who is also a member of Macon's City Council.
