Authorities in India are trying to identify a girl found living with monkeys in a forest in India and thought to have been raised by the animals.

The girl, who is thought to be about 8 years old, was spotted by woodcutters, according to The Associated Press, in the Katarnaight Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh.

“They said the girl was naked and was very comfortable in the company of monkeys,” a police officer told the AP.

“When they tried to rescue the girl, they were chased away by the monkeys,” he said.

The girl was eventually rescued in January by officers who managed to escape the angry monkeys in a jeep.

The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment, where she is making improvements, the Times of India reported.

When she was first brought in she walked like an animal using both her arms and legs, and did not know how to eat properly, according to the Times of India. Now she reportedly walks and eats normally.

The girl will be sent to live in a home for juveniles until authorities can identify her or find her parents, according to the hospital.
