The Georgia State Patrol Thursday identified the girl killed in a Wednesday afternoon wreck on Ga. 316 in Barrow County as 6-year-old Gracelynn Perry of Statham.

Perry was a passenger in a westbound Chevrolet Monte Carlo that investigators said turned left in front of an oncoming tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Monte Carlo, Mary Kathleen Perry, 50, of Statham, was flown to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The GSP said the crash happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when the Monte Carlo driver failed to yield to the oncoming truck at the intersection of Ga. 316 and Christmas Avenue in Bethlehem.

Witnesses told the GSP that the traffic light was green for both the Monte Carlo and the Freightliner truck, and that the setting sun created glare for westbound drivers.

The truck hit the right side of the Monte Carlo, sheering the passenger side from the car and separating the seat belts from the vehicle. The child was ejected and died at the scene.

The truck driver, Timothy D. Douglas, 52, of Statesboro, was not injured.

The GSP has not announced any charges in the incident, which remains under investigation.

The wreck shut down Ga.316 for several hours Wednesday evening.
