Ten schools across Georgia are Blue Ribbon Schools, winning that designation this year from the U.S. Department of Education for overall excellence.

Seven of those schools are in or near metro Atlanta, two are in Savannah and one, a large elementary school with a high percentage of students whose families are poor, is in Blackshear, Ga.

Their enrollments range from more than a thousand students at a couple of the schools, down to 185 at one of the Savannah elementaries on the list.

Most of the Blue Ribbon schools, eight, are elementaries, one is a middle school in Covington, and one is a Gwinnett County high school.
