A northwest Georgia man was shot and killed Wednesday by officers responding to a domestic violence call, the GBI said Thursday in a news release.

Jack Lamar Harris, 60, of Chickamauga, held an unidentified woman against her will at his home, according to the stage agency. The victim called 911, saying she was also being physically abused. Walker County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Henry, Lookout Mountain Drug Task Force Commander Dewayne Brown and task force Agent Robbie Tate arrived on the scene and were met at the back door by Harris.

The officers told the GBI that Harris did not respond to verbal commands to show his hands. He then reentered his residence and came back outside. This time, according to the officers’ accounts, Harris was holding a black handgun. He continued to ignore commands and eventually pointed the weapon at the officers, who responded with multiple gunshots, the GBI said.

Harris was pronounced dead on the scene. The woman he allegedly abused was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The officers were not hurt.

The incident is the 61st officer-involved shooting the agency has been asked to investigate this year, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
