A north Fulton County mother accused of driving drunk with her two kids in her car initially told Milton police she hadn’t been drinking when she caused a crash that seriously injured another driver, according to police.

Then, Jacqueline Lucania admitted she’d had several glasses of wine before the Tuesday afternoon crash, Lt. Travis Parker told Channel 2 Action News.

“Her breath sample was two times over the legal limit,” Parker said Thursday.

Lucania, 46, of Alpharetta, was driving eastbound on Redd Road when she ran through a stop sign and entered an intersection, hitting the Plymouth Colt driven by George Elkins, according to police. Elkins, 64, was driving southbound on Hope Road when his car was hit, shortly before 4 p.m.

“Just as I got to the intersection, this blue vehicle, all I saw was a blue vehicle right there in the windshield,” Elkins told Channel 2. “I hit the brakes as quick as I could.”

Elkins said he tried to stop, but couldn’t avoid the collision.

“The seat belt, it threw me against it with enough impact that it cracked my sternum,” he said.

Elkins was taken to the hospital for treatment and Lucania was arrested, police said. Neither Lucania nor her children were injured. The children were released to their grandmother.

Lucania was charged with DUI, two counts of child endangerment, stop sign violation and no license on person. She was put into a patrol car and transported to the Alpharetta jail, according to police.

“Without any questions being asked of her, Lucania stated to (the officer) that she was a good mother and that she only had three or four glasses of wine to celebrate her divorce.”
