Stores, city streets and even living rooms are beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but North Georgia hasn’t seen anything resembling holiday weather.

With less than two weeks to go until Thanksgiving, and 42 days until Christmas, the region is still running at above-average temperatures.

But cooler air is coming, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Friday.

“Especially by Monday and Tuesday, that’s when some of our coolest air so far of the season is going to roll on in,” he said. “You’re going to notice a big difference early this morning.”

Temperatures in the upper 50s Friday morning are not necessarily chilly, but Monahan said it will feel colder after morning lows near 70 degrees Thursday morning. A light jacket might be a good idea, he said.

“Headed home, no jacket needed,” Monahan said. “It’s going to be a nice afternoon. Sunshine around, and we’re going to up to about 70 degrees.”

A projected high of 71 is still six degrees above average for this time of year, according to Channel 2. Monahan said “a little reality” will arrive next week in the form of afternoon temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

The weekend will still be warm, however. Monahan predicts highs in the low 70s through Sunday, which has a 20% chance of a stray shower in the mountains.

“Saturday is going to be your best day for outdoor plans this weekend,” he said. “It’s not that Sunday is going to be a bad day, but Saturday is going to have the most sunshine, and we’ll be completely dry across North Georgia.”

Metro Atlanta interstates are moving well to start the Friday morning drive, but there are still some delays on Ga. 400 after an earlier crash shut down the freeway, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

All northbound lanes were blocked after the crash at the North Springs MARTA station before the wrecked vehicles were moved to a right lane, the Traffic Center reported.

Lanes reopened just after 6 a.m.
