A former Gwinnett County-based insurance broker pleaded guilty to a $3.7 million fraud scheme involving phony policies, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.
John Paul Kill, 63, of Norcross, the former operator of Appeal Insurance Agency, LLC, pleaded guilty to a charge of insurance fraud for collecting over $3.7 million from nearly 800 trucking companies nationwide, acting U.S. Attorney John Horn’s office said in an emailed statement.
“This defendant swindled hundreds of trucking companies into purchasing phantom cargo insurance policies,” Horn said. “Kill abused his clients’ trust and led many small businesses to operate on our roads unwittingly without proper insurance and put them at risk for catastrophic losses.”
Kill was arrested in July 2014, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The investigation found businesses located in Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Vermont affected by the fraud.
Sentencing for Kill is scheduled for July 10.
