Here’s some good and bad news for your weekend: More rain is expected and a flood watch has been extended, but most road construction has been put on hold.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is restricting construction-related lane closures until 5 a.m. Monday.
“We anticipate heavy traffic over the Independence holiday week,” spokesman Thomas Howell said in a statement. “To lessen the impact on traffic, the GDOT has restricted lane closures on interstates and major state routes.”
Meanwhile, weekend downpours may bring flooding as temperatures hover in the mid-80s, Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.
“There will be heavy rain at times, combined with an already saturated ground,” Nitz said. “There could be additional flooding.”
A flood watch has been extended for all of metro Atlanta through Sunday morning, Nitz said. An addition of 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible through the weekend, he said. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning in effect until Saturday evening for the woodlands and fields along Big Creek in Forsyth and north Fulton counties.
Rain chances will continue into early next week, but drier weather is possible, with only scattered showers Tuesday and Wednesday, Nitz said.
