Fire displaces several families at condo complex in Gwinnett
A fire tore through a Gwinnett condominium complex Friday night, displacing more than a dozen people.
The fire in the 1000 block of Olde Mill Lane near Norcross destroyed two units and affected six more. According to a statement from the Red Cross, they assisted six families, a total of 17 people.
The flames broke out about 6:25 p.m. in one of the second-floor units.
Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement that they are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but they looked into a gas fireplace that was in one of the units.
The fire took about an hour for crews to put out. No injuries were reported, Gwinett fire said.
“It was traumatizing. My heart was shaking. It was so difficult not to be crying or flustered. It was a lot,” resident Mara Edwards told Channel 2 Action News.
She said she was about to take a nap when she heard yelling outside.
“We heard neighbors outside screaming and yelling, and somebody came and beat out on our door and said, ‘Get out! Get out! It’s a fire!’” Edwards said.
