Fairburn woman jailed, charged with leaving son in hot car

Tyrone police have charged a mother with reckless conduct for leaving her sleeping 5-year-old son in the car while she shopped for groceries.

Police said Thursday the Cadillac was not running and the windows were down when EMTs first arrived at the Publix Shopping center on Highway 74 Wednesday afternoon. The boy was unharmed though he complained of being hot; the outside temperature was 89 degrees.

Surveillance video shows the boy had been in the car about 20 minutes before a passerby spotted him. It was 10 minutes more before the mother responded to several pages over the store’s loud speaker.

Police said Semeatress Robinson told officers her son was asleep when she got to the store and she didn’t want disturb him since she only needed a few things. “She was found to have a cart full of groceries,” according to a statement from police.

The 28-year-old Fairburn woman is being held in the Fayette County jail, awaiting a bond hearing.
