A driver is in jail after police said he hit a woman with his car at an Acworth gas station and then drove away from the scene Saturday evening.

Corbin Engler, 26, of Buchanan faces several charges including aggravated assault and hit and run in connection with the crash, which happened at the Valero gas station on North Main Street.

Police were called to the area after someone reported a person being hit by a car, according to Acworth police spokesman Capt. Mark Cheatham. When police arrived at the scene, they found 27-year-old Katie Lambert lying in the parking lot, Cheatham said.

She was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries and was last reported in critical condition.

Cheatham said the car that hit Lambert had left the gas station before officers arrived. Acworth police sent a description of the vehicle to surrounding agencies, and police in Emerson located it and detained everyone inside.

Engler was questioned in the case and then arrested. He was booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, where he remains.

In addition to aggravated assault and hit and run, he is charged with cruelty to children, reckless driving and aggravated battery.
