DeKalb County School District officials said this morning that all Blue Bell products have been removed from the school district for fear of listeria contamination.

The district was notified Tuesday about the recall. All products were pulled and picked up by Blue Bell representatives the same day.

“There will be no Blue Bell products distributed at DeKalb schools for the remainder of the school year,” the DeKalb County Schools release stated.

The ice cream company announced Monday it was voluntarily recalling all its products — from ice cream to frozen yogurt, sherbet and other frozen snacks — after recent testing discovered Listeria monocytogenes in ice cream. According to Blue Bell officials, the organism can cause serious or fatal infections in young children, the elderly or those with weak immune systems.

Cobb County Schools officials said they were notified about the recall this morning, prompting all Blue Bell products to be pulled from the schools this morning, as directed in the district’s recall procedures in its food and nutrition services operations manual.

“Every school has confirmed with the district that the affected items have been marked and removed” and are scheduled to be picked up by a local Blue Bell representative, officials said in a press release.

Calls to other area school districts have yet to be returned.
