DeKalb police were still searching Wednesday for a BMW driver who fled after running over a 6-year-old boy on his new bike Christmas Day.
“They are still working on the tips,” Fore told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ” Still a lot of good, old-fashion police work to be done on the information.”
The boy remains in critical condition at a local hospital but was improving, Fore said. Meanwhile, the boy’s mother has set up a web page to raise funds to help with medical and other expenses.
"On Christmas Day Jace Thomas-Durham was struck by a unknown driver," said the web page. "Jace's mother, Michelle Durham, has been by his side since the accident. We are asking the community to come together and donate to assist this single mother of two financially during there troubling times. Times are going to be even more difficult once Jace returns home. Friends and family are asking for donations no matter the amount (every penny counts)."
Michelle Durham said surgeons operated on Jace's leg Tuesday but could not tackle the head injury because of swelling on the brain, Kemah Hudson, whose son Malachi was playing with Jace during the hit-and-run, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“She said he is starting to stabilize,” Hudson said. “She is just keeping her faith.”
Police are looking for a silver, 6-series BMW coupe, which investigators believe has damage on the front passenger side.
Neighbors said they had seen a BMW speeding through the neighborhood previously on the 25-mph Ward Lake Trail in Ellenwood. DeKalb police questioned a neighbor who owned a similar car over the weekend, Hudson said.
