A former DeKalb County police officer was sentenced to three years behind bars after pleading guilty Thursday to causing a wreck that killed two women.

Kristina Hambie, 28, entered a guilty plea to reckless driving, violation of oath by a police officer and two counts of vehicular homicide, the DeKalb district attorney’s office said. Hambie, who was ordered to turn herself in on May 11, will spend the remainder of her 10-year sentence on probation.

On Feb. 19, 2011, Hambie was on duty but not responding to an emergency when she crashed her patrol car into a Nissan Altima in the Avondale Estates area, according to investigators. Both passengers, Shelley Amos and Cheryl Burton, died in the crash. Amos, 56, and Burton, 51, were friends for more than 20 years.

At the time of the crash, Hambie was traveling 74 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to investigators.

“Her reckless actions claimed the lives of two innocent victims,” DA Robert James said in an emailed statement. “Their families will forever be changed by this tragic situation.”

Hambie was later fired from her job. She was indicted in October 2011.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
