Ninety school bus batteries have been stolen in two months, according to DeKalb County school police. But investigators believe they may have a picture of the vehicle of the person responsible.

After the latest thefts were discovered, some students at Stone Mountain Middle didn’t make it to school because buses were disabled, system leaders told Channel 2 Action News.

“The bus never showed up so I said, ‘Well, I’ll take you to school,’” parent Gloria Blanchard said.

In some cases, up to 12 batteries were taken at once, leading the district to create a task force to address the problem, Chief Don Smith with school police said.

“It’s to the point where you have sleepless nights because you’re asking, ‘OK why?’” Smith told Channel 2. “It’s impacting the students and there doesn’t seem to be any conscience among the individuals committing these crimes.”

Investigators believe the suspect’s vehicle is an older model, black Ford Expedition, Smith said. The SUV was caught on camera but police say they need help identifying the driver.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
