They were probably trying to stay warm during the cool fall nights. But the furry critters that created a nest in a Fayette County home’s attic are being blamed for causing a fire that caused serious damage.

On Nov. 4, a Peachtree City homeowner lit a fire in the fireplace of his North Fairfield Drive home, according to Ron Mundy with the city’s fire department. That’s when the homeowner started smelling smoke and called 911.

Firefighters arrived to find flames through the roof of the home after a fire ignited in the attic, Mundy said. Investigators believe squirrels and possibly other animals had created a nest around the home’s chimney, and the animals’ bed was highly flammable when situated above the fireplace.

No injuries were reported. But the fire caused extensive damage to the home.

Charges are not expected against the four-legged residents.
