Half of North Georgia will get a chance to dry out Thursday as rain chances move into the isolated range ahead of a drier weekend.
The other half, south of I-20, will have to wait another day for drier conditions to take hold, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. The best chance for rain Thursday is still along and south of a cold front, which has stalled out south of Atlanta.
“Highest rain chance will be south of I-20 during the afternoon,” Monahan said. “A little rain here and there this morning, but really for our big storms that will be this afternoon on the Southside, and isolated storms in the weekend forecast.”
With high humidity, fog is settling in for the Thursday morning commute. A little mist and drizzle is possible, but Monahan said heavy downpours won’t start to develop until mid- to late afternoon.
“By 4 p.m., from near Carrollton and Douglasville to Griffin and Eatonton, that’s where we’ll see our best chance for showers and storms this afternoon,” he said.
Showers and storms are 40% likely there, and some could turn gusty. According to Monahan, damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning will be the primary threats, along with heavy rain.
Drier air coming off the northeast Georgia mountains will mean a limited 20% rain chance on the Northside, he said, although there will still be some clouds around. The clouds will hold temperatures back in the 80s this afternoon, with a projected high of 87 degrees in Atlanta.
Monahan is calling for middling rain impact on travel Thursday, about a 2 out of 3. The impact will be even lower Friday and into the weekend, when rain chances drop back to about 30% across the region.
Drier conditions will also mean higher temperatures for the weekend. Monahan is expecting Atlanta to return to the 90s Friday, according to the latest forecast.
