Sunshine is in the forecast Monday as North Georgia shakes off the clouds and temperatures get back on track for the month of May.
Atlanta did not leave the 60s over the weekend, recording highs about 10 degrees below average for this time of year. According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan, a high of 75 degrees in Monday’s forecast will get the city a little closer to average, but highs in the 80s the rest of the week are right on target for late spring.
While there are a few clouds in the sky Monday morning, Monahan said the weather is no reason to feel glum.
“In some spots it’s going to be a little gray to start,” he said. “By the afternoon, though, we’re going to finish mostly sunny in most spots this afternoon. It should be a pretty good one today with that mainly clear sky in our forecast.”
Monahan said heat is building in the middle part of the country, but it will be blocked out of Georgia by an area of low pressure building up along the coast. That weather system will eventually be responsible for clouds and showers on Friday, Monahan said, but for now it is keeping the region dry and mild.
“We’re going to be up near 80 degrees, while to our west they are going to baking in the 90s this week,” he said.
There is no rain to worry about Monday once the clouds clear and the sun comes out. This time of year, North Georgia gets about 13.5 hours of daylight, and eight of them will be sunny, Monahan said.
A bit more sunshine is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, he said. Thursday should be the warmest day this week with a high of 83 degrees, and rain returns Friday with a 40% chance of a shower, according to the latest forecast.
