Two people aboard a small plane that crashed Monday afternoon near the Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta have died, officials said.
Authorities were notified of the crash in “a remote area” near the greenway north of Kimball Bridge Road just before 1 p.m., Alpharetta police spokesman Sgt. David Freeman said.
Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that the plane was preparing to land at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. It was on an instrument approach to the airport when it crashed under unknown circumstances, according to the NTSB.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the two fatalities in an incident notification but released no other details.
On social media, the NTSB said the plane was a Beechcraft BE58, a twin-engine aircraft that can hold four or six people, including the pilot. It’s a newer model of the Beechcraft B55 that crashed into Lake Hartwell last month, killing its pilot.
Freeman said the crash caused no danger to the public, but the Big Creek Greenway was closed while first responders worked at the site.
Investigators with the NTSB were expected to arrive at the scene Tuesday morning, the federal agency said.
