Three men from the same family entered guilty pleas Monday just before going on trial in Walton County for a double killing that took place in 2017, officials said.

Two of the men, 24-year-old Dequan Gunn and 23-year-old Jotavious Gunn, pleaded guilty to murder, among other charges, and received life sentences, according to Walton County District Attorney Randy McGinley.

A third man, 25-year-old Quintadric Gunn, pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter, possession of marijuana and other charges, McGinley said. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 20 on probation.

The case was based on the killings of 19-year-old Antavious Smith and 18-year-old Dontravious Stanley in a shootout at a home just outside of Social Circle in November 2017. Stanley was also a relative of the Gunns, the GBI said at the time.

According to McGinley, the three Gunns planned to lure Smith and Stanley to the home where Dequan and Quintadric lived and rob them of both marijuana and money. Jotavious Gunn was tasked with bringing the two victims to the house.

Once Stanley and Smith were at the scene, the robbery did not go as planned, McGinley said. The result was a shootout involving a 9mm handgun, .40 caliber handgun, .357 revolver and shotgun, with more than 20 shots fired. Stanley died at the scene and Smith died later at the hospital, McGinley said.

“A plan to rob a small amount of marijuana and money led to two young men (ages 18 and 19) dying and 3 young men going to prison to serve lengthy sentences. My hope is that this resolution not only serves as closure to the families of Antavious and Dontravious but also serves as a lesson to young people that their actions can lead to extremely horrible unintended consequences,” McGinley said in a press statement.
