The man accused of shooting a 12-year-old boy and leaving him critically injured was a friend of the victim’s father, Atlanta police said at press conference.

Police, who believe the shooting was accidental, said the suspect turned himself into authorities Thursday morning, Atlanta police Maj. Adam Lee said.

“He called (police) and made arrangements to meet with a police officer, who brought him to headquarters,” Lee said. “He cooperated and told use where we could get the gun.”

Police have not released the name of the suspect in the Thursday morning shooting that left Brian Sosby critically injured inside a southeast Atlanta apartment on Confederate Avenue.

“There was a social gathering at the residence,” Lee said. “The person pulled out the gun to show it to someone else and at some point pulled the trigger. The young man was in front of the barrel of the weapon and subsequently shot.”

Sosby was with his parents and four other adults when he was shot in the stomach about 12:15 a.m., police said. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition and later transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, Channel 2 Action News reported. Sosby underwent two surgeries.

The alleged shooter ran away from scene, but police said he had a change of heart and turned himself in.

“When you’re dealing with a situation like this, you’re dealing with a lot of psychological issues,” Lee said. “It’s not unreasonable (on our end) to think that someone might leave the scene and in this case…turn himself in.”

No charges have been filed, but police are continuing to interview witnesses.

The shooting occurred days after 10-year-old honor student Sincere Jordan was killed in a Fourth of July shooting at a northwest Atlanta apartment complex.

Jordan attended Peyton Forest Elementary School.
