Man arrested after killing wife and mother, calling 911 to confess, cops say

Investigators said Johnny Edwards called 911 and confessed.

A Fayette County man is in jail after allegedly killing his wife and mother — then calling 911 to confess.

Johnny Thomas Edwards, 34, of Fayetteville, faces two murder charges after deputies responded to his parents’ home Saturday afternoon to find the grisly scene, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said.

About 2:30 p.m., the bodies of Edwards’ 57-year-old mother, Kathy Edwards, and his 31-year-old wife, Venus Quanteh, were found inside the house on Coventry Court, Channel 2 Action News confirmed.

The incident began as a domestic dispute, but authorities did not release a motive or the victims’ causes of death.

It’s unclear what time the two died, but deputies said Johnny Edwards called 911 to confess to killing them, Channel 2 reported. He was standing outside when the deputies arrived.

“The 911 caller is the only suspect at this time and he was taken into custody,” a spokesman for Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb said in a news release.

Johnny Edwards and his wife had been living in the home along with his parents, Channel 2 reported. His father was out of town when the incident took place.

Investigators remained at the home in the Highgrove subdivision through the day Saturday to process the scene.

The investigation “centers around the lone suspect,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident,” the spokesman said.

The suspect is a former football standout at Starr’s Mill High School in Fayette County who went on to play defensive back at Wake Forest.

Edwards remains in the county’s jail without bond.
