A woman was shot in the chest as she, her child and boyfriend were leaving Lenox Square Wednesday evening, Atlanta police said.

The couple and the child were followed by two men as they went into several stores in the mall, such as Forever Diamonds, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. Warren Pickard said.

Pickard said the men followed the couple to their car. That’s when one them jumped in the back seat as the woman was putting the child in the car.

The men asked the couple what they purchased and one of them fired shots, Pickard said. One landed in the woman’s chest.

The shooting victim, a 23-year-old woman, tried to drive herself to Piedmont Hospital but pulled over at a Benihana’s restaurant on Peachtree Road.

She is in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
