A woman attacked while running on a Roswell trail said Monday she's thankful to be alive and that she wasn't more seriously injured.

“It was the most frightening thing that’s ever happened to me,” Lee Watkins told Channel 2 Action News.

Watkins, 51, was running on the trail along Riverside Road near Northshore Drive around 7 a.m. Sunday when she was hit in the back of a head, according to police. Watkins said she saw the man, but didn’t notice anything unusual about it him.

But as she passed him, she felt a sudden, intense pain on the back of her head.

“I fell forward and blinked and was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what just happened?’” Watkins said.

The man casually walked away, and Watkins called police. The avid runner said she got seven staples in the back of her head, along with numerous scrapes and bruises. She was treated at the hospital and released Sunday.

On Monday, Watkins said the assault and her injuries could have been much worse.

“I’m thankful to be alive,” Watkins said. “I’m thankful that I was protected and I’m thankful the police came so quickly and were diligent to look for somebody like this.”

Roswell Officer Zachary Frommer said the department is increasing patrols in the area. Runners and walkers are urged to have a partner with them when using trails, particularly when it’s dark outside.

“Just be aware,” Frommer said.
