Atlanta police have made an arrest in connection with a fatal hit-and-run early Wednesday morning.
The victim, identified by police as Emily Cameron, died after being run over on Arizona Avenue in northeast Atlanta about 1:30 a.m.
Tracy Mitchell, 45, turned herself in later in the day, Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said. She is being charged with first degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving and two counts of hit and run and was to DeKalb County jail.
Jones said Cameron apparently fell out of the vehicle as Mitchell made a turn. Then she was struck and hit by the vehicle and the driver left the scene.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was exiting a vehicle when the driver of the vehicle accelerated in reverse knocking the victim to the ground and striking her…” Jones told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The suspect fled the scene after the accident.”
“Whether or not it was intentional or anything like that is the gist of the investigation,” Atlanta police Major Timothy Peek told Channel 2 Action News.
