A pedestrian who was hit by a vehicle while crossing a DeKalb County street more than two weeks ago has died, police said.

William D. Bedor, 60, of Atlanta, was hit Dec. 16 by a Dodge Charger as he crossed the northbound lanes of Clairmont Road between Briarcliff Road and the I-85 North entry ramp, AJC.com previously reported. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died Wednesday.

DeKalb police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent said investigators “don’t expect charges to be filed against the driver.” The driver told officers that Bedor “came out of nowhere” and walked in front of his vehicle, according to a police incident report.

A witness said Bedor was standing in the middle of the roadway, waving another vehicle to pass before he began to walk across, the report said. The witness then told officers she heard a “loud noise,” which is when she saw him lying in the road. The driver and witness stayed at the scene until officers arrived about 5:25 p.m.

Bedor's family told AJC.com that he was a Marine veteran and loving father who served as a volunteer aide for former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland. Bedor's LinkedIn page said he worked with Cleland from 1994 to 2000.

The family declined to comment further about the incident at this time.

Bedor grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., and stayed active in that community, resident Leslie Brill Meserole told AJC.com by phone. She said Bedor was her best friend over the past five years, since he got involved advocating for a law named after her daughter.

“Amanda Lynn’s Law” was signed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2015 following the death of Amanda Lynn Wienckowski. The law increased the penalty in the state for intentionally concealing, altering or damaging human remains from a misdemeanor to a felony.

She said he dedicated his life to serving others, including her daughter’s memory.

“There will never be another William Bedor,” Meserole said.
