Two men wounded in a Sunday evening shootout in the middle of a Clayton County road are facing aggravated assault and weapons charges.

The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Sunday on Walker Road near Bethsaida Road, Clayton County police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.

Marbury said in an email the wounded men “are believed to have initiated an altercation that ultimately led to their injuries.”

Channel 2 Action News reported the two men were part of a larger group that was blocking the street and had words with the driver of a BMW.

When the suspects flashed a gun, the BMW driver pulled out his own gun and exchanged gunfire with the suspects, according to Channel 2.

A 20-year-old man shot in the chest remained in the hospital early Monday, while a 19-year-old was treated for a graze wound to the head and released to police custody. Both were charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Channel 2 reported.

The BMW driver will not be charged. Police believe he acted in self-defense, according to the station.

Police have not determined why the group was blocking the street.
