Thieves use U-Haul to steal from Walmart, then crash it, Atlanta police say

Police are on the lookout for several people suspected of using a U-Haul to steal more than $4,000 worth of merchandise from a northwest Atlanta Walmart.

The theft happened early Friday morning at a store on Howell Mill Road. Officers responding to a burglary call spotted several people taking items from shipping containers outside the store and loading them into a U-Haul, police told AJC.com.

“Upon arrival, officers observed the U-Haul and two sedans fleeing the location,” Atlanta police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty said in a statement. “Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicles, but the suspects refused to stop and officers then disengaged.”

It appeared the thieves got away with the merchandise, much of which was small electronics, Channel 2 Action News reported. Then the U-Haul crashed.

“While returning to the Walmart, officers observed a traffic accident involving the U-Haul at 17th Street and Howell Mill Road. Officers were advised that the occupants of the U-Haul fled the scene after the accident,” Daugherty said.

The driver of the other vehicle is expected to be OK. According to Channel 2, police are looking for at least seven people in connection with the theft. They are still at large.

Police were able to recover the stolen goods, totaling $4,242.69.

The theft was the second similar incident in two days, the news station reported.
