A 16-year-old boy was in custody Tuesday, accused of stabbing multiple classmates at a Utah high school before stabbing himself, according to police.
Five students suffered wounds ranging from critical to fair during the attack at Mountain View High School in Orem, police said. It happened just before 8 a.m. local time in a boys locker room, according to Alpine School District officials.
All five injured students -- and the suspected attacker, also a student -- were taken to hospitals for treatment of their wounds. None appeared to be life-threatening, the school district said.
Orem police did not immediately identify the teen suspected of stabbing his classmates or share the motivation behind the attacks. Authorities said a school resource officer took the suspect into custody by 8:45 a.m.
The school was placed under lockdown as police launched an investigation, but the lockdown was lifted by 9:30 a.m.
"Law enforcement has determined the school safe and the school will resume normal activities," school officials said.
They were expected to release more information at a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m.
