An 18-year-old man was in critical condition Wednesday after a gun battle with Cobb County police, the GBI said.

Devonte Williams shot at police who tried to pull him over Tuesday after learning he was wanted on an armed robbery charge, GBI spokesman Bahan Rich said.

Kennesaw police got an anonymous call around 5:10 p.m., providing Williams' location and a description of the vehicle he was in, Rich said.

Police were performing a routine traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description at the corner of Cobb Parkway and Bells Ferry Road in the Fidelity Bank parking lot, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Williams, who was a passenger in the SUV, started shooting at police, who returned fire and struck him three times, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Two Cobb County police officers were treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and have since been released.

Williams remains at WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center in Marietta.

He has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, Rich said.
