A man accused of fleeing the scene of a Henry County armed robbery Tuesday was shot dead about an hour later in an alleged home invasion, police said.

Robert MacDonald is accused of threatening a Dollar General employee with a knife and forcing her to empty a cash register, Henry County police spokesman Capt. Mike Ireland said in a news release.

The 26-year-old grabbed the cash and ran from the store on East Atlanta Road in Stockbridge, then jumped into the bed of a truck parked outside, Ireland said.

While detectives were investigating the robbery, police responded to a home invasion on Kinsey Drive in Stockbridge.

The homeowner told police he’d heard his dogs barking, but hadn’t seen anything amiss outside about 10:30 p.m.

When he went back inside, the homeowner heard glass break, Ireland said. MacDonald came face to face with the homeowner in the hallway.

The homeowner told police MacDonald had cuts on his hands and threatened him, admitting he was running from police, Ireland said.

That’s when the homeowner grabbed a shotgun, pointed it at MacDonald and called for help.

The homeowner’s father came out of his bedroom with a handgun and fired at MacDonald, hitting him in the chest, Ireland said.

The homeowner called police, who said MacDonald died of his injury at the scene.

Henry County police are still investigating the incident, Ireland said.
