A Richmond County teacher accused of stealing $25 worth of supplies from an Athens Party City allegedly left her 3-year-old granddaughter alone in a hotel room.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, 60-year-old Vernell G. Morgan teaches at Glenn Hills High School in Richmond County. She was in Athens on a field trip with other children and adults when she left her granddaughter alone in a Holiday Inn Express to go purchase supplies for a child's party, the newspaper reported.
The Department of Family and Children Services took custody of the girl.
Morgan, who pretended to pass out when police noticed her in the store, was arrested March 21 on misdemeanor charges of theft by shoplifting and reckless conduct, according to online jail records. She was released from the Clarke County Jail on $2,500 bond.
