A suspected shoplifter who shot himself after a brief standoff with officers at a Wal-Mart in Union City on Wednesday has died, police said Thursday.

Dalmar Johnson, 20, of Atlanta, died about 8 p.m. Wednesday, Union City police said.

The shooting happened just after 3 p.m. at the store on Jonesboro Road, Channel 2 reported.

When officers responded to the shoplifting call, Johnson produced a previously concealed pistol, police said in a news release. He suffered serious injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

No other information was immediately available.
