A suspect was shot and wounded Wednesday morning during an attempted bank robbery in south DeKalb County, police said.

The incident happened just after 9 a.m. at the Citizens Trust Bank on Wesley Chapel Road at South Hairston Road.

DeKalb police Lt. Pam Kunz told the AJC that shortly after the branch opened, a man armed with a handgun entered the bank, “making demands of the tellers.”

“The suspect was definitely aggressive in his statements to the tellers and the customers,” Kunz said.

When a bank security guard confronted the gunman, “the suspect made an aggressive movement with his handgun and the security guard fired several rounds,” Kunz said.

“The suspect was shot in the knee,” she said.

Kunz said a bank teller was also wounded, apparently sustaining a graze wound from debris from the shots that were fired.

“The suspect has been transported to a local hospital, where he will be examined by doctors and then taken to the DeKalb County Jail,” Kunz said. The wounded teller was also taken to the hospital.
