Absences at a metro Atlanta high school will be excused Friday after a threat of a shooting, the principal said.

The threat, written on a desk, “indicated that there would be a shooting at the school on May 5th,” North Paulding High School principal Mark Crowe said.

Though he described it as “a low-level, non-credible threat” and said operations will continue as normal, he added that “parents and families should discuss and make a decision that is right for your family.”

Prom attendance requirements will be waived for those who decide not to attend school, he said.

The sheriff’s office plans to have an increased presence at North Paulding as well as Burnt Hickory Elementary School and Sammy McClure Middle School. There’s no indication the threat extends to Burnt Hickory and Sammy McClure. The move is precautionary, officials said.

“If your student has any information regarding this threat,” he said, “please encourage them to speak with a staff member, administrator or contact the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.”
