A Hall County man is in jail on child cruelty charges after he slapped his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son to “toughen him up,” the sheriff’s office said.

Christopher Wayne Germond, 18, of Gainesville, is accused of slapping the boy’s face to the point of bruising both cheeks, sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Stephen Wilbanks said.

The boy’s mother, Germond’s girlfriend, was showering Tuesday and told deputies she could hear her son screaming inside the Arbor Drive home they all share.

When she got out of the shower, she saw Germond hitting her son repeatedly, Wilbanks said.

Deputies arrested him on a felony charge of cruelty to children in the second degree.
