A former Spalding County sheriff’s captain accused of assaulting employees within the agency was arrested Thursday on sexual battery and other charges.
David Gibson, 51, of Milner, surrendered at the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, where GBI agents arrested him about 10:20 a.m., Sheriff Wendell Beam said in an emailed statement.
“The request for the GBI investigation came from Spalding County District Attorney Scott Ballard after his office had received an internal affairs report alleging Gibson had assaulted employees of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office,” GBI spokesman Fredrick J. Wimberly said in another emailed statement. “Additional victims who were not a part of the internal affairs inquiry came forward, and reported allegations of misconduct and criminal activity against Gibson.”
Gibson is being held at the Clayton County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, influencing witnesses, stalking, public indecency, sexual battery and violation of oath of office, Wimberly said.
He also was charged with two counts each of simple battery and aggravated sexual battery.
An investigation is ongoing, Wimberly said.
