A Floyd County man was arrested Tuesday on a murder charge in connection with the death of his 3-year-old granddaughter, the Rome News-Tribune reported.

Antonio Montezz Hudson, 48, of Rome, faces a count of murder and two counts of second-degree child cruelty after the child, Deajrain Hudson, died a year ago, the newspaper reported. Hudson is accused of causing the girl’s drug-related death.

The incident took place between Jan. 7 and Jan. 8, 2019, at the Ashland Park Apartments, according to arrest warrants obtained by the News-Tribune. The girl died at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Assistant Rome Police Chief Debbie Burnett told the newspaper that an autopsy revealed the presence of a controlled substance inside the child. She would not elaborate on the specific type of drug but did say that Hudson was in “control of the child at the time.”

The child cruelty warrants alleged that Hudson failed to provide medical care to the child in a timely manner and failed to provide a safe living environment, the News-Tribune reported. Both are allegedly factors in the girl’s death.

The warrants were issued Monday, and Hudson turned himself into the Floyd County Jail the following day, jail records show. He remains behind bars without bond.
