A suspected shoplifter shot himself after a brief standoff with officers at a Wal-Mart in Union City on Wednesday, police said.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m. at the store on Jonesboro Road, Channel 2 Action News reported.

When officers responded to the shoplifting call, the detained suspect produced a previously concealed pistol, police said in a news release.

He suffered serious injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

No other information was immediately available.
