Police in New Mexico say a driver of a stolen car got herself stuck in a bad situation Monday morning.

Just before dawn, police in Rio Rancho received a call about a car submerged in a sinkhole, KOAT reported.

Neighbors said the female driver was able to free herself from the car, and tried desperately to get her car out of the sinkhole. She sought the aid of the nearby fire department, but when they told her they couldn't help, the woman fled the scene with her dog.

Police told KOAT that once they extricated the car, they found out it was stolen. The car also contained drug paraphernalia, police said.

Police are still looking for the driver.

The sinkhole was caused by a water main break, police said.
