Two men wounded Monday night in a barrage of bullets at a northwest Atlanta intersection had just left a recording studio when someone in another vehicle pulled alongside the victims and opened fire, police said Tuesday.
According to an Atlanta police incident report, the victims, who were in a Jeep Patriot that had just left 11th Street Studios, “advised they did not see anything, only heard gunshots and [were] trying to avoid being shot.”
One passenger, Ricky Garner, was shot in the chest, and a second passenger, Christopher Liggins, suffered a bullet wound to the leg. The driver of the Jeep and two other passengers were unhurt.
According to the report, Liggins told investigators “they were at the studio with [rapper] Ant Glizzy and were about to get gas and head back to Washington, D.C.” when the shooting occurred.
A security guard who witnessed the incident told investigators the victims stopped at the intersection of 11th Street and Bellingrath Avenue “and seemed to be waiting for another vehicle.”
A Volkswagen that was parked nearby followed the Jeep, the security guard told police.
When the Jeep reached a stop sign at Northside Drive, “the Volkswagen swerved around to the side of it and started shooting directly into the vehicle,” according to the guard.
Both of the Jeep’s rear passenger windows were shattered, and “there were bullet holes starting from the rear driver side door to the trunk,” the report states.
After the shooting, the victims were driven to Howell Mill Road. Officers responding to a person shot call found the victims near Bocado burger restaurant about 10 p.m. Monday.
Garner and Liggins were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not available Tuesday morning, but police said Monday night that one was in critical condition.
Investigators recovered 21 .40-caliber bullet casings from the shooting scene. A .40-caliber handgun was later found in the middle of the road at nearby Tech Parkway and Means Street.
