An 11-year-old boy who accidentally killed himself Friday while playing with a gun was identified as Alan Martinez Monday morning.

Alan, originally thought to be 12-years-old, was a student at Summerour Middle School in Norcross, Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

The gun went off as the boy played with the firearm in a Gwinnett garage . Another 9-year-old boy was also in the garage at the time of the shooting. Alan's mother, who police don't expect to charge, was inside the home near Norcross.

“This is a very sad and unfortunate reminder for gun owners to ensure that your guns are locked in a place that children cannot access,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Deon Washington said.

The incident is the latest in a series of recent accidental gun incidents involving children.

A 16-year-old girl in Lawrenceville was arrested in February on suspicion of accidentally shooting and killing a 19-year-old man.

In January, a 17-year-old was killed by a 16-year-old in an accidental shooting at an apartment complex in DeKalb County. Separately, a child accidentally shot a 2-year-old girl in LaGrange.

A 13-year-old boy accidentally shot his mother in the neck in their home near College Park in December.
