Police: Arrest made in drug-related homicide at Roswell hotel

July 6, 2015

An arrest has been made in what police now believe was a drug-related murder at a Roswell hotel.

David Spates, 27, of Marietta was arrested Sunday morning and charged with the murder of Anthony Leftenant, who died after being shot multiple times Friday night at the Atlanta Hotel on Old Dogwood Road. The Cobb County police SWAT team detained Spates "at an address off Roswell Road," Roswell police spokesman Officer Zachary Frommer said.

Spates is being held at the Fulton County jail, Frommer said.

Police initially said only that the shooting began as an argument between three men, and that the disagreement had spilled out of a hotel room and into a common area before several shots were fired. Frommer said Monday that the shooting “appears to have been drug-related.”

“Roswell police investigators are still working to identify any remaining suspects or witnesses,” Frommer said in an email, “but there is no further update at this time.”

Leftenant, 30, was an Alpharetta resident.

A family member told Channel 2 Action News that Leftenant was not involved with drugs and was at the hotel to help a friend move.
