A month after two dogs were found shot to death in Cherokee County, officials said Monday they have charged the owners.

However, Brenda Louise Gravely and Sarah Kerstetter were not charged in the shooting deaths of the two pit bull mix dogs, who were found Jan. 27 along Friendship Road near Waleska, Cherokee County Marshal’s Office Chief Ron Hunton said.

“While the person[s] responsible for the shooting deaths of the dogs have not been identified,” he said in a statement, “… the investigation into the deaths of the two dogs have resulted in the owners being charged” with two counts of unrestrained animal, two counts of animal neglect/inadequate vet care and two counts of without proof of rabies inoculation.

“[The] investigation revealed the dogs both suffered from neglect before they were shot and killed and not cared for in a manner that was humane and proper,” Hunton said.

The marshal’s office gave Gravely and Kerstetter, both of Canton, citations. They were not arrested for those violations.

The shooting remains under investigation. Investigators are awaiting necropsy and ballistic reports, Hunton said.
