A police chase Tuesday morning ended with an officer and a suspect in the hospital and a minivan in a Clayton County ravine, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The man accused of carjacking a woman about 11:45 a.m. allegedly bit her in the back before taking off in her car.

She asked Channel 2 not to use her name, but said she was thankful she wasn’t along for the ride.

After taking off in the car, the driver clipped the side mirror of an unmarked police car, Jonesboro Police Chief Franklin Allen said.

The driver, whose name has not been released, didn’t know about a detour on the road that leads to the highway.

He led a chase north on Jonesboro Road, where there was a detour for construction.

Allen told Channel 2, the driver of the stolen car drove down a dead-end road and kept going through a wooded area. He drove down an embankment and crashed on Commerce Drive in Jonesboro.

“I don’t even understand how he got past all of this stuff to get that far down,” the woman who owned the car told Channel 2.

Allen said a police canine grabbed hold of the driver, after he ran from the crashed car.

“He did actually strike the canine and he will be charged with that as a felony offense,” Allen said.

Both the police officer and the suspect were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
